Pratibha Patil completed her master’s degree in Political Science and Economics. She took a Law degree from Government Law College and practiced law at the Jalgaon District Court.

She also developed an interest in social issues such as improving the conditions faced by Indian women.

Elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly at 27

In 1962, at the age of 27, she was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly for the Jalgaon constituency. Thereafter, she won in the Muktainagar on four consecutive occasions.

First woman Governor of Rajasthan

She became a Member of Parliament in Rajya Sabha in 1985 and stayed there till 1990. Pratibha Patil became the 24th governor of Rajasthan. She was the first woman to hold office.

Got two-thirds of votes to become President

In the voting process for the President of India, Patil garnered nearly two-thirds of the votes and took office as India's first woman president on July 25, 2007.

Accused of spending money on traveling

According to the records, Patil was noted for having spent more money on foreign trips, and having taken a greater number of foreign trips, than any prior president.

Set up institute chains

The former President set up Vidya Bharti Shikshan Prasarak Mandal, an institute which runs chains of colleges and schools in Amravati, Mumbai, and Jalgaon.
