Droupadi Murmu, the NDA's presidential candidate, defeated Yashwant Sinha, the opposition candidate. She will become India's first tribal and second female president of India.

Won by Almost Double Votes

Returning officer P C Mody declared Murmu as the winner and said that she got 6,76,803 votes against Sinha's 3,80,177 votes.

Ram Nath Kovind Retires

Murmu received more than 64% of the valid votes, resulting in a resounding victory. She will take over for Ram Nath Kovid as the nation's fifteenth president.

Background and Career

Former minister for Odisha and two-term BJP legislator from Rairangpur in Mayurbhanj, Murmu is 64 years old.

Family and Early Background

In 2009, she lost her son in an accident and her second son in 2013. In 2014, her husband Shyam Charan Murmu died. Her daughter Itishree is married to Ganesh Hembram.

First Woman Governor of Jharkhand

She was chosen to be the governor of Jharkhand, where she served in that capacity until 2021, becoming the state's first female governor.
