This year's Nobel Peace Prize was jointly awarded to Ares Bialiatsky, the Russian human rights group Memorial, and the Ukrainian human rights group Center for Civil Liberties.


Ales Bialiatski

Ales Viktaravich Bialiatski is a Belarusian civic leader known for his work with the Viasna Human Rights Centre. Since 14 July 2021, he has been imprisoned for alleged tax evasion.


Reason for Nobel Peace Prize

Ales Bialiatski is the head of Belarus's Viasna Human Rights Centre which has helped families of demonstrators, who were jailed and raised voices on the torture.


Memorial is an international human rights organisation, founded in Russia to study and examine the human rights violations and other crimes committed under Joseph Stalin's reign.

The Center for Civil Liberties

The Center for Civil Liberties is a human rights organization led by the Ukrainan lawyer Oleksandra Matviichuk. It was founded in Kyiv in 2007.

Reason for Nobel Peace Prize

The Center for Civil Liberties has been advancing human rights and democracy in Ukraine. The center has taken a stand to pressure the authorities to make Ukraine a full-fledged democracy.
