On Thursday itself, in this hour of need, India has sent relief material to Afghanistan by Air Force aircraft. Tweeting about this, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs said that the first consignment of India's earthquake relief assistance to the people of Afghanistan has been sent to Kabul. The rest of the consignment will also be forwarded.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi tweeted that India expresses its condolences and sympathies to the victims of the horrific earthquake in Afghanistan and their families and all those affected by it.
He said that we understand the suffering of the people of Afghanistan. In this hour of need, we have given them the commitment to help and support them. According to Afghanistan's Bakhtar news agency, 1,000 people were killed and 1,500 others were injured in an earthquake in Afghanistan early on Wednesday.
A 5.9-magnitude earthquake struck the central region of Afghanistan early Wednesday. Its effect was visible in four districts of Paktika province, Gyan, Barmala, Naka and Jiruk, as well as in Spera district of Khost province. The United Nations' humanitarian agency 'United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs' (OCHA) said that the epicenter of the quake was at a depth of 10 km. At least 1000 people have died and many have been rendered homeless. About two thousand houses have been destroyed.
