The Centre has decided to raise the upper age restriction for recruitment under the "Agnipath" programme to 23 years from 21 years for the year 2022, following protests against the new model for recruiting soldiers into three military forces.

Earlier on Tuesday, during the introduction of the Agnipath scheme, the Centre said that young people aged 17 and a half to 21 would be inducted into the Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy for a four-year stint.

The age limit for enlistment has now been lifted to 23 for the 2022 class only, as per the latest instruction from the Defence Minister.

Defense Ministry Statement

"Cognisant of the fact that it has not been possible to undertake the recruitment during the last two years, the government has decided that a one-time waiver shall be granted for the proposed recruitment cycle for 2022. Accordingly, the upper age limit for the recruitment process for the Agnipath scheme for 2022 is increased to 23 years," according to a statement issued by the defence ministry.

A large number of people have criticised the Agnipath scheme, claiming that it will have a negative influence on the military's ability to function.

In addition, young people in numerous states, including Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Jharkhand, have criticised the three-armed-forces recruitment scheme.
