America comment on Nupur Sharma controversy, praises BJP | Nupur Sharma Case | BJP

In the Prophet Commentary controversy, the US has now broken its silence, on Thursday, the US condemned the statement and expressed happiness over the BJP's action. The BJP suspended its national spokesperson Nupur Sharma for making controversial comments against Prophet Mohammed and expelled his Delhi unit media chief Naveen Kumar Jindal from the party.

America on the issue

US President Joe Biden's administration has said that America encourages India to promote respect for human rights. US State Department spokesman Ned Price said in his daily press conference on Thursday, "We have condemned the derogatory remarks made by two (former) BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) office-bearers and we are pleased to see that The party publicly condemned his statements. "We have been in regular dialogue with the Indian government at the senior level regarding human rights concerns, including freedom of religion or belief," he said.

"We encourage India to promote respect for human rights," Price said in response to a question. When the (US) Secretary of State was in New Delhi last year, he said that the Indian and American people believe in common values - dignity of man, respect for human beings, equality of opportunity and freedom of religion or belief. He said that these are the core values of our democracy and Americans raise their voices in support of them around the world.

BJP’s statement

BJP General Secretary Arun Singh said that the party is against such ideology which insults any religion or community. BJP does not support this kind of thinking. Every religion has flourished well in the history of thousands of years of India. BJP respects all religions. Before America, many Islamic countries have expressed their displeasure on this matter. Among these, there were many countries whose relations with India are considered close. 

People protesting in Bangladesh had demanded a formal condemnation from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Before America, many Islamic countries including Qatar, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan have expressed their displeasure over the remarks on the Prophet.
