Army Helicopter with CDS Gen. Bipin Rawat on board crashes in Tamil Nadu's Coonoor, 13 people dead

Helicopter carrying CDS General Bipin Rawat Crashed

An army helicopter carrying Chief of Defence Staff Bipin Rawat crashed in Coonoor, Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. Thirteen out of fourteen people on board have been confirmed dead in the crash.

There is no confirmation over the condition of General Bipin Rawat.

According to reports, there were fourteen people on board.

ANI News agency reported that CDS Bipin Rawat, his wife, security commandos and an IAF pilot were on board the Mi-17V5 when it met with an accidnet between Coimbatore and Sulur in Tamil Nadu.

As per reports, CDS Bipin Rawat was en route to Wellington in Coonoor from the Indian Air Force base in Sulur. 

Search and rescue operation is being carried out. Local military officers have reached the location and were informed that locals have taken two bodies with 80% burns to a local hospital while more bodies were seen downhill.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh have been briefed about the accident.

Inquiry ordered by IAF

Indian Air Force also tweeted and confirmed the accident. It also informed that an inquiry has been ordered in the case. It wrote, "An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident."

Politicians tweet for CDS and others' safety

Several political leaders have been praying for the safety of CDS and others who were on the helicopter. 

Nitin Gadkari wrote, "Shocked to hear about the tragic crash of helicopter with CoDS Shri Bipin Rawat ji on board. I pray for everyone's safety, wellbeing"

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi also prayed for CDS and others' safety. He tweeted, "Hoping for the safety of CDS General Bipin Rawat, his wife and others onboard the chopper.Prayers for speedy recovery."

 

National Spokesperson of INC, Abhishek Singhvi wrote, "I pray for the safety of our CDS & his family & hope noone is injured. These choppers have been procured recently so a proper investigation & enquiry must be done internally & with the manufacturer."

AAP leader Raghav Chadha also tweeted, "Deeply saddened to learn about the crash of chopper ferrying our CDS Bipin Rawat and his wife. Praying for everyone's safety."
