There is great concern over whether the monkeypox virus, which is spreading to more and more countries, may also infect other countries, much like the coronavirus, which first appeared in 2020 and has since infected nearly every country on the earth. But might it spread like a pandemic? Outside of the tropical regions of west and central Africa, where it predominates, there are more than 300 suspected and confirmed instances of the monkeypox virus from more than 20 other nations.

The situation is changing as monitoring expands in non-endemic countries, and according to WHO, more monkeypox cases will be found. The immediate focus of effort is alerting those who may be most at risk for monkeypox infection in order to stop future spread. The most vulnerable individuals are those who have had close personal contact with someone who has monkeypox while they are symptomatic.

However, a well-known US medical professional appears unconcerned about the virus and asserts that it is doubtful that monkeypox will cause a worldwide epidemic like to Covid-19. According to the World Health Organization, the monkeypox outbreak is unusual but still controllable. Moderna Inc. is examining potential monkeypox vaccinations in pre-clinical trials as the disease spreads throughout the US, Canada, and some European countries.
