New Punjab Ministers:
After a long uproar in Punjab, Captain Amarinder Singh resigned from the post of CM and now Punjab has got a new Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi. Charanjit Singh Channi took oath as CM on Monday. Along with him, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and OP Soni have been sworn in as the Deputy CM of Punjab.
Before the name of Charanjit Singh Channi was finalized, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa's name was leading in the race for the post of CM till Sunday. But by noon, the Congress surprised and finalized the name of Charanjit Singh Channi.
Talking about Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, he hails from the Jatt Sikh community. He won the election of MLA thrice and was a cabinet minister in the state government of Punjab. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa has also been the Vice President of the Punjab Congress.
Randhawa was once close to former CM Captain Amarinder Singh but slowly grew apart. Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa is currently an MLA from the Dera Baba Nanak assembly seat. His father Santokh Singh was also in Congress and was the Congress state president twice. Santokh Singh worked to strengthen the Congress during his tenure.
On Monday, OP Soni also took oath as the Deputy CM of Punjab. He was on the post of Education Minister in Captain Amarinder Singh's government. OP Soni comes from the Hindu community and is an MLA from Amritsar Central. He has become an MLA for the second time in a row and will now take over as the Deputy CM.
Om Prakash Soni is considered close to Captain Amarinder Singh. When Amarinder had come to Raj Bhavan to resign, OP Soni was still with him. When Amarinder had called a meeting in the night amidst the discord with Sidhu, OP Soni was also involved in it. It is believed that the Congress high command has done the work of cultivating Amarinder Singh by making a close aide of the Captain as the Deputy CM.
