25 km before Yamunotri Dham, 15 metres of Yamunotri Highway near Ranachatti collapsed. Only small vehicles can pass through here. Due to this, 1200 passengers coming from Jankichatti to Barkot through buses and about 3,000 passengers travelling from Barkot to Jankichatti are stuck between Barkot and Sayanachatti.
The NH team is engaged in the work of opening the road. Large vehicles have already been stopped at a safe place before Ranachatti. Passengers have been accommodated in hotels. The supply department has been asked to make arrangements for these passengers. NH Barkot has deployed machines on the spot.
District Disaster Management Officer Devendra Patwal said that the team of National Highway Authority of Barkot section near Ranachatti is busy in making the highway smooth. The road has to be widened by cutting the hill. Since the road is rocky on the upper side, it will take time, so the road is likely to be ready by Thursday evening for large vehicular movement.
It is being said that the movement can start till 12 o'clock today. The administration has asked the Transport Department to arrange small vehicles to rescue the stranded passengers at various places due to the closure of the highway.
Barkot police station inspector Gajendra Bahuguna said that 24 big buses and 17 mini buses returning to Barkot are stuck between Rana Chatti to Jankichatti. They have been stopped at Jankichatti, Kharsali, Phoolchatti, Krishnachatti, Hanumanchatti stops. Buses of passengers will be able to leave only when the road is smooth.
