Chief Justice of India News: Justice DY Chandrachud has become the 50th Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice DY Chandrachud as the Chief Justice of India (CJI).

Justice DY Chandrachud replaced former Chief Justice of India UU Lalit. Justice Lalit had a short tenure of 74 days as CJI which ended on November 8. Now Justice Chandrachud will be the CJI for two years i.e. till November 10, 2024.

Who is DY Chandrachud?

DY Chandrachud is the son of16th Chief Justice YV Chandrachud Justice Chandrachud is the son of 16th Chief Justice of India YV Chandrachud. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Bombay High Court on 29 March 2000. On 31 October 2013, he was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

Made many Historical Judgements in the Past

There are countless historical judgments in the name of Justice DY Chandrachud. Recently, Justice Chandrachud in a landmark judgment that promoted women's reproductive rights in a big way. This right has been given to all women by repealing the law prohibiting unmarried or single pregnant women from having abortions for 24 weeks. Defining marital rape for the first time, married women who are pregnant due to forced sex by their husbands have also been given a new right. He said that this violates the spirit of the right to equality.
