Aamir Khan is without a doubt one of the most well-known names in the world, not just in Bollywood. Mr. Perfectionist, one of Bollywood's Khans, has long been the face of quality cinema. Aamir Khan’s career is characterized by his adaptability, dedication, passion, and talent. Aamir was most recently seen in the Hindi remake of Forrest Gump, Laal Singh Chaddha. The film was directed by Advait Chandan and starred Kareena Kapoor Khan and Aamir Khan.
Aamir Khan has given many hit films like Lagaan, Sarfarosh, Raja Hindustani, Rang De Basanti, 3 Idiots, Taare Zameen Par, and Dangal. But, he has also turned down many films that went on to become box office hit. From Sanju to Darr to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, here are some films that Aamir Khan turned down.
Sanju
Aamir Khan gets along well with director Rajkumar Hirani. The actor-director team has previously collaborated on films such as ‘3 Idiots’ and ‘PK’. However, in ‘Sanju’, Hirani cast Ranbir Kapoor as the lead. A role in the film was also offered to Aamir.
Darr
Shah Rukh Khan’s character in ‘Darr’ is one of the most recognisable in Bollywood. It's difficult to imagine anyone else playing the obsessive lover played by King Khan. But the role was first offered to Ajay Devgn, then to Aamir Khan, before being offered to SRK. Actors at the time preferred roles that provided ‘main character’ energy and were not interested in playing negative characters. Shah Rukh not only accepted but also aced the challenge.
Hum Aapke Hain Koun
Sooraj Barjatya’s ‘Hum Aapke Hain Koun’ is one of Bollywood’s most iconic and well-loved films. Salman Khan and Madhuri Dixit played the lead roles in the film. Few people are aware that the role of Salman was first offered to Aamir Khan. However, Aamir apparently didn’t like the script and declined the offer. Salman was cast in the role, which went on to become one of his most popular films.
Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge
Aditya Chopra’s ‘Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge’ has achieved unprecedented popularity and adoration. Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol played the lead roles in the film. The film was reportedly first offered to Aamir Khan by Yash Raj Films. However, the actor decided not to take the part. The same year, he co-starred in ‘Rangeela’ with Urmila Matondkar. DDLJ is the film that redefined the definition of romantic films in Bollywood.
Swades
Aamir Khan was offered a role in ‘Swades’ after working with Ashutosh Gowariker in ‘Lagaan’. However, the actor passed on the offer as he reportedly found the script “very boring”. The role was then given to Shah Rukh Khan, who went on to give an outstanding performance in the film. The film was about a successful Indian scientist who returns to his village to bring his grandmother to America with him, rediscovering his roots in the process.
