Gujarat Election 2022: Voting on 89 seats in the first phase today, 788 candidates in fray

Out of the total 182 seats in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly, 89 seats will be voted in the first phase on Thursday i.e. December 1. These seats are spread across 19 districts of the state and the fate of a total of 788 candidates is at stake in this phase. The campaign for the first phase of polling in the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled state ended at 5 pm on Tuesday.

36 parties have fielded the candidates

In the election, 36 other parties including BJP, Congress, AAP, BSP, SP, CPM, BTP have fielded their candidates for the seats in the first phase. Till now there has been a direct contest between BJP and Congress in Gujarat. This time, the Aam Aadmi Party has made the fight interesting by entering the fray. Aam Aadmi Party has fielded its candidates on 181 seats. In the last Gujarat elections, the BJP had won 99 seats, while the Congress was reduced to just 77 seats.

Previous elections stats

In the 2017 election results for the 89 seats in the first phase, BJP had won 48 seats, Congress 39, BTP 2, and NCP one. In this way, it is a challenge for both the BJP and the Congress to retain their respective seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party has nothing to lose. On the other hand, on a regional basis, there are 54 seats in the Saurashtra-Kutch region, where 65 percent of voting took place. Congress got 31 seats, BJP got 23 and other parties got 1 seat. There are 35 seats in the South Gujarat region, where 70 percent of voting took place in 2017. In South Gujarat, BJP got 27 seats, while Congress had to satisfy with eight seats.
