In Leicester, England, after a cricket match between India and Pakistan, a mob of militants attacked a Shiva temple, ransacked a Shiva temple and also brought down the saffron flag above the temple. In the UK, where the death of Queen Elizabeth II is being mourned, suddenly such a hateful incident has shocked the whole world. Leaders of the Hindu and Muslim community together on Tuesday made a goodwill appeal.

Violence due to rumours

Migrant group Insight UK has claimed that most of the incidents of violence in Leicester have been due to rumours and fake news circulated on social media. Leicester Mayor Peter Soulsby said things were being distorted and shared on social media. He alleged that people from outside were instigating violence in the city. In a video circulated on social media, it is seen that the flag of a temple is being lowered and glass bottles are being thrown there.

20-year-old Amos Noronha was sentenced to 10 months in prison after being convicted of possessing an offensive weapon in connection with the violence. According to the Daily Mail report, Noronha was among 47 people arrested throughout the weekend following the clashes in which 16 officers were injured. Dharmesh Lakhani, who has lived in the city for more than 50 years and worked with local mosques, says he feels it was outside influence that fueled the violence in the city.

Police appealed to maintain peace

Leicestershire Police have called for dialogue with local community leaders in the area to restore peace. Police said violence or disorder would not be tolerated in the city. "We have called upon the people to stay away from the area as long as the police action is on," the police said.

Following reports of clashes on Saturday night, Rob Nixon, temporary chief constable of Leicestershire Police, said in a video message via Twitter: "We have received several reports of chaos on the streets of Leicester tonight (Saturday). Officers have been posted there. We are controlling the situation.” The police have said that in the coming days, a major police operation will continue in the area.
