How to Join the Indian Army after 12th Science? Check Detailed information about TES and NDA

If you are a 12th pass student, have a passion for your country and want to join the Indian Army, you are at the right place. Let's first talk about the Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme.

What is the Indian Army Technical Entry Scheme?

Technical Entry Scheme is one of the opportunities for the defence aspirants to join the Indian Army as an officer in the Engineering Core. The TES is conducted by the Indian Army twice a year. There are no written examinations like UPSC- CDS or NDS; Candidates can directly apply for the SSB interview based on their marks in 12th standard (Physics, Chemistry, Maths).

The selected candidates under TES recruitment are admitted to engineering courses by the Indian Army, and they are appointed directly on the Rank of Lieutenant after the successful completion of the course.

Eligibility criteria for TES

Candidates must have passed the 10+2 examination or its equivalent with a minimum aggregate of 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from recognized education boards. Only male candidates are eligible to apply for TES entry of Indian army.

A candidate must be an unmarried male and must either be : (i) A citizen of India, 

or (ii) A subject of Nepal, 

or (iii) A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka and East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Selection Criteria for Indian Army TES 46 Course

  1. Shortlisted applicants will be called for SSB interview from December 2021 onwards.

  2. Candidates will be put through a two stage selection procedure. Those who clear Stage I will go to Stage II.

  3. Medical Exam will be conducted for those who clear Stage 2

  4. Candidates recommended by the SSB and declared medically fit, will be issued a Joining Letter for training in the order of merit, depending on the number of vacancies available, subject to meeting all eligibility criteria.

How to apply?

The candidate needs to apply ‘online’ on the Directorate General of Recruiting Website www.joinindianarmy.nic.in. The application will be screened at the Directorate General of Recruiting, Integrated Headquarters, Ministry of Defence (Army) and the candidate thereafter will be detailed for SSB.

Now let’s talk about the National Defence Academy(NDA) entrance exam.

What is the NDA entrance exam?

The National Defence Academy (NDA) exam is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). The exam is conducted for the recruitment of individuals in the Army, Navy and Air Force Wings of NDA.It is conducted twice a year and is conducted in two stages, stage one is the written exam and stage two is the interview. The written exam is conducted in two meetings, one for GAT and the other for Mathematics. The training period after the selection is 3 years. First, the candidate has to clear the written exam, then they are called for an SSB interview, those who clear the interview have to go through a thorough medical check-up based on the standards set by the board. Finally, a merit list is released with the names of the recommended candidates. Marks of all the stages are added up, only those who clear get recommended and called for training.

Eligibility criteria for NDA

Candidates who are 12th class pass under the 10+2 pattern of education from any state board or equivalent examination are eligible for the Army wing of the National Defence Academy. For the Air Force and Naval Wings of National Defence Academy, candidates must have a 12th pass with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics or appear in one, of a 10+2 pattern of school education from any state board or equivalent.

The candidates have to be one of the following in order to be eligible for the NDA exam. 

  1. Indian citizen

  2. A subject of Nepal or Bhutan

  3. A Tibetan refugee who came to India before January 1st, 1962 with an intention of permanently settling in India.

  4. Individuals of Indian origin who have migrated from the countries - Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, and East African countries - Kenya, Uganda, The United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire and Ethiopia or Vietnam with an intention of permanent settlement.

  5. The certificate of eligibility has to be issued by the Government of India to all foreign nationals.

Both male and female candidates must be unmarried throughout the selection process as well as till the training is completed. If a candidate marries before training, they will not be selected. If a candidate marries during training, he/she will be discharged and liable to pay all the expenditure incurred on him during the training by the government.

How to apply?

In order to register for the UPSC NDA Exam,

  1. Candidates should go to the official website of UPSC.

  2. Click on the UPSC NDA Application link. 

  3. The UPSC NDA application form filling is a 2 step process, candidates are first required to register and then fill the detailed form.

  4. Fill the registration form and click submit. Then, go to the detailed application form. 

  5. The application fee of candidates is ₹100/.
