INS Vela: The fourth Scorpene-class submarine INS Vela commissioned to Indian Navy today, know its features

INS Vela:

The fourth Scorpene class submarine has been commissioned into the Indian Navy today. With the induction of INS Vela, the war power of the Indian Navy will be boosted. Under Project 75, 6 submarines are to be built, out of which 3 submarines were already commissioned and today this fourth submarine was commissioned. It was commissioned by Indian Navy Chief Karambir Singh on Thursday morning.

This submarine is capable of anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, laying mines as well as surveillance. Three of the six submarines, Kalvari, Khanderi, Karanj have already been commissioned. 

INS Vela was commissioned by Admiral Karambir Singh, Chief of the Naval Staff. The submarine has been built by Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in collaboration with France's M/s Naval Group.

INS Vela features:

INS Vela is modern and known for its strength when it comes to dealing with the enemy, an advanced acoustic silencing technology has been used in the submarine. Radiated noise level is also low in this. The nature of the submarine is hydro-dynamic. This submarine, which has the power to hit accurately guided targets, can cripple the enemy. The previous incarnation of INS Vela was commissioned on 31st August 1973 and served the nation for 37 years before decommissioning on June 25, 2010.

The Indian Navy said in a statement that 'Vela' is capable of causing destruction by aggressive attacks inside the sea of mighty power. From this submarine, the anti-ship missile can be targeted both underwater and surface using torpedoes and tubes at the same time. INS Vela, launched in May 2019, has completed all major port and sea trials, including weapon and sensor tests, despite the COVID restrictions.

Other submarines of the series:

The first submarine of this series, INS Kalvari was launched in October 2015 and was commissioned in December 2017. The second INS Khanderi was launched for tests in January 2017 and was commissioned in September 2019. The third submarine INS Karanj was launched in January 2018. This commission was done on 10th March 2021. INS Vela is the fourth submarine of this series.

The fifth submarine INS Vagir was launched in November 2020. It has started port trials. It is expected to surface for the first time in December 2021. The sixth submarine INS Vagsheer is also in the advanced stage.
