International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2023: History and Significance

Together with UNICEF and the United Nations Population Fund, WHO released a joint statement opposing the practise of female genital mutilation (FGM) in 1997. (UNFPA). Since then, various initiatives have been launched to combat FGM. - UNFPA and UNICEF launched the Joint Programme on Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in 2007 to hasten the practice's end. - In 2008, WHO and 9 other United Nations partners released a declaration titled "Eliminating Female Genital Mutilation:

An Interagency Statement" regarding the abolition of FGM. - In 2010, the World Health Organization (WHO), in coordination with other significant UN agencies and international organisations, released a "Global strategy to discourage health care providers from practising female genital mutilation." In 2012, the UN General Assembly passed resolution A/RES/67/14 on ending female genital mutilation (FGM).

 

Facts about female genital mutilation

- The UNFPA estimates that it costs $95 per girl to stop female genital mutilation today.

- Female genital mutilation is common in almost 30 nations with rapid population growth, affecting at least 30% of girls under the age of 15.

More than 200 million girls and women are still living today who underwent genital mutilation in 30 countries, including those in Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.
