Former JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar joined Indian National Congress today along with Dalit leader Jignesh Mevni. Rahul Gandhi was present at the induction ceremony.

Earlier this month, Kanhaiya Kumar had met Rahul Gandhi, which evoked speculations about his inclusion in the grand old party. The inclusion was earlier scheduled for September 27, but because of the call for ‘Bharat Bandh’ by the protesting farmers, it was postponed and will take place today, i.e., September 28.Inclusion of Jignesh Mevani
Jignesh Mevani, an independent MLA from Gujarat, announced last week, that he will join the Indian National Congress along with former JNU leader Kanhaiya Kumar. Mevani had won election from Vadgam assembly constituency in Banaskantha district of Gujarat in 2017, with the support of Congress party.
“On September 28, I will be joining the Indian National Congress along with Kanhaiya Kumar,” he told PTI.
Posters for welcome of Kanhaiya Kumar were spotted outside Congress office in Delhi, ahead of his proposed inclusion in the party.
After both the young leaders were included in the party, Congress General Secretary KC Venugopal told media persons, "We look forward to working with these young leaders, Kumar and Mevani, to defeat the fascist forces ruling this country."
Mr. Kumar was earlier the part of CPI and contested in 2019 Lok Sabha elections from his hometown Begusarai against BJP's Giriraj Singh, but failed to win
