The Lakhimpur Violence Case was once again heard in Supreme Court of India. The apex court directed the UP government to provide security to the witnesses in the case and file answer in connection to the death of Journalist Raman Kahyap and Shyam Sundar. The next hearing is scheduled on November 8,2021.
Speaking on behalf of State government, Senior Advocate Harish Salve informed the court that out of 68 witnesses, statements of 30 witnesses have been registered and 23 people have claimed to be the eye witnesses of the case. To this Supreme Court said that when rally contained thousands of farmers, why only 23 have agreed to be eye witnesses.
Replying to this, Salve said that an advertisement for witnesses has been given and video footages have also been received and hence, investigation is underway. He also said that the government can provide statement of witnesses to the court in Sealed packet.
The Supreme Court has also asked the forensic lab to speed up the task of verification of video footages and has asked the government to file its answer on the death of Journalist Raman Kashyap and another person Shyam Sundar. The court has also asked the government to provide security to the witnesses.
During the previous hearing also, the court had slammed UP government and UP police for the slow speed in investigation of Lakhimpur Kheri Violence Case.
On October 3,2021 an SUV Car crashed into the farmers who were protesting at Lakhimpur Kheri. This led to the death of 4 farmers following which a violent clash broke out and farmers took the lives of 3 BJP Workers and a local journalist also lost his life. Farmers have alleged that son of Union Home Minister for state Ajay Mishra, Ashish Mishra is responsible for the incident and was driving the SUV Car. However, the allegations have been constantly denied by Ajay Mishra and Ashish Mishra. The matter is under investigation and many people including Ashish Mishra have been arrested by the UP Police.
