The criminal group Los Tequeleros claimed responsibility for Wednesday's attack in a video shared on social media, although there was no immediate confirmation from local authorities.

Mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeida's party, the PRD, condemned his killing and demanded justice. In a statement soon after the attack, the PRD said the party condemned the attack, demanded justice and sought freedom from violence and crime.
