Expressing grief over the Morbi incident during an event in Delhi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah said, "A heart-wrenching incident happened in Gujarat today. Many people including children lost their lives in this. No one can control the accidents, but this incident, which has shaken the sentiments of the entire country, has hurt and saddened the people. I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.
The cable bridge is said to be more than 100 years old. It was built during the British rule. This bridge of the time of king-maharajas was seen swinging like Ram-Jhula and Lakshman Jhula bridge of Rishikesh, hence it was also called Jhulta bridge. It was started after renovation just 5 days back on Gujarati New Year. This bridge was closed for 7 months.
