National Legal Service Day 2022: Date, History and Significance

National Legal Services Day is celebrated on 9 November. National Legal Services Day (NLSD) is celebrated to implement the Legal Services Authority of India Act, 1987. The day aims to spread legal awareness as well as provide free legal aid and advice to the poor. The main objective of celebrating this day is to spread awareness about the justice system, rights and law in the country. Along with this, ensuring justice to all people, providing free legal aid and advice to the poor and weaker section is also included.

National Legal Service Day History

The Legal Services Authorities Act 1987 was enacted by the Central Government on 11 October 1987 on the recommendations of Article 39A of the Constitution of India and its Committee. This act has been brought into effect on 9th November 1995 or rather it was implemented. To mark the date of coming into force of the Legal Services Authority Act 1987, it was decided to observe National Legal Services Day on 9th November every year and declared this day as National Legal Services Day in 1995 by the Supreme Court of India.

Significance of National Legal Service Day

NALSA has been formed under the Legal Services Authority Act, 1987 with the objective of providing free legal services to the weaker sections of the society and to organize Lok Adalats for amicable settlement of disputes. The Chief Justice of India is the Chief Patron of NALSA and the second senior judge of the Supreme Court of India is the acting Chairperson of the Authority. Article 39A of the Constitution provides for free legal aid to the poor and weaker sections of the society in order to promote justice on the basis of equality of opportunity. Article 14 and Article 22(1) oblige the state to ensure equality before the law.
