Neeraj Chopra tops the list of athletes recommended for Khel Ratna; Ravi Dahiya and Lovlina Borgohain also recommended

The Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award has been recommended for, highest-ever, 11 athletes this year. As Expected, Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold medalist Neeraj Chopra, the second Indian to win individual gold at Olympics and the first ever Indian to win gold in Athletics, tops the list of athletes recommended for India’s highest ever sporting award. 

Wrestler Ravi Dahiya, who won silver medal at Tokyo Olympics 2020, Boxing bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain and PR Sreejesh, goalkeeper of bronze-medalist Indian Hockey Team have also been nominated for the Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award.

The list of recommended athletes also include all the five paralympics gold medalists Avani Lekhara (shooting), Manish Narwal (shooting), Sumit Antil (athletics), Pramod Bhagat (badminton) and Krishna Nagar (badminton). 

Sunil Chhetri, India’s football captain and the Indian women’s cricketing superstar Mithali Raj conclude the list of athletes nominated for Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. The highest sporting Award was earlier known as Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and was later renamed as Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award this year.

India's performance at Tokyo Olympics 2020 and Paralympics 2020

This year’s olympics was historic for India since the country won seven medals, its highest ever tally of Olympics medals. India won 1 gold, 2 silver and 4 bronze medals. Three of these Olympics medalist- Bajrang Punia, PV Sindhu and Mirabai Chanu are already Khel Ratna Awardees. India had an equally historic paralympics too, where the athletes gave breakaway performance and the country won 19 medals- 5 gold, 8 silver and 6 bronze.
