Today is the eighth day of the monsoon session of Parliament. Even today, opposition MPs can create ruckus in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. Meanwhile, opposition MPs protested in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in support of 23 MPs who were suspended for creating ruckus during the monsoon session.
Congress MPs on Wednesday staged a sit-in in the Parliament House complex to protest against inflation, the inclusion of several food items under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the suspension of their four Lok Sabha members. Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and several other party MPs staged a sit-in in front of Mahatma Gandhi's statue in the Parliament House complex.
Four Lok Sabha members Manickam Tagore, TN Prathapan, Jothimani and Ramya Haridas, who were suspended for the remainder of the monsoon session, protested by singing the hymn 'Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram...'. They carried placards in their hands on which the prices of many food items were written. Several Congress MPs raised slogans demanding withdrawal of the suspension of the members.
Aam Aadmi Party's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has been suspended. AAP's Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh has been suspended from the Rajya Sabha for the remainder of the current week for raising slogans in Parliament, tearing papers and throwing it towards the Chair tomorrow. The Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha has given this information.
Announcing the suspension of the AAP leader, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh Narayan Singh said that he threw paper on the chair during the proceedings of the House on Tuesday. Singh's suspension was followed by a motion by V. Muraleedharan, junior minister for parliamentary affairs, for "misconduct" and "absolute disregard for the authority of the House and the bench". This motion was made by voice vote. The monsoon session of Parliament began on July 18 and will continue till August 12. There will be 18 sittings during the session.
