United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has given a green signal for 3,000 visas for young professionals from India to work in UK every year. The British government said that India is the first visa-national country to benefit from such a scheme. In this regard, a UK-India Migration and Mobility Partnership were agreed upon last year.

The UK Prime Minister's Office said in a tweet, "Today 3,000 educated Indian nationals aged 18-30 were offered the opportunity to come and work in the UK for two years under the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme." The announcement was made at the Downing Street readout, hours after British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Prime Minister Narendra Modi met on the sidelines of the 17th edition of the G-20 summit. It was Sunak and Modi's first meeting after taking over as the first Indian-origin British PM last month.

PM Modi's office also said in a tweet, "Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Rishi Sunak are in talks on the first day of the G-20 Summit in Bali." Downing Street said in a statement, "The launch of the scheme is a significant moment for our bilateral relationship with India and our commitment to the wider Indo-Pacific region."

It states that Britain has more ties with India than almost any other country in the Indo-Pacific region. Almost a quarter of all international students in the UK are from India, and Indian investment in the UK provides 95,000 jobs. The UK is currently negotiating a trade deal with India.

If this agreement is reached then it will be the first agreement of its kind between India and any European country. The trade deal will build on the UK-India trade relationship, which is already worth £24 billion, and will allow the UK to take advantage of opportunities in India's growing economy. In parallel to the dynamic partnership with India, the British government said it was also strengthening its ability to deport immigration offenders. The UK and India had made an agreement on this in May 2021.
