Violence erupted in Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, against the objectionable statement given by former BJP leader Nupur Sharma on the Prophet. The area of Ranchi's main road turned into a battlefield. Stone pelting started on the police. An uncontrollable mob targeted the police while stones were pelted at nearby shops and a religious place as well. The police who came forward to control the crowd also had to run away. Many policemen were seriously injured in this stone pelting.

Earlier, Ranchi DIG Anish Gupta said, 'The situation is a bit tense but under control. We are making every effort from our side. Heavy security deployment has been made. Senior officials are also present on the spot. From here the crowd has dispersed.
The police had to use tear gas shells and opened fire in the air to control the violent mob. Had to shoot. Keeping in view the situation after the incident, Deputy Commissioner Chhaviranjan imposed curfew in Ranchi city with immediate effect.
