Siddaramaiah Biography

Siddaramaiah, better known by his nick name Siddu, is an Indian politician who served as Karnataka's 22nd Chief Minister from May 13, 2013, to May 17, 2018, becoming just the second person to do so. In the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, he has served as a representative for the Badami Assembly seat since 2018, the Varuna Assembly constituency from 2008 to 2018 and in 2023, the Chamundeshwari Assembly constituency from 2004 to 2007, 1994 to 1999, and from 1983 to 1989. 

Siddaramaiah’s Personal Life and Education

Siddaramaiah was born into a farming family in a small village called Siddaramanahundi in Varuna Hobli close to T. Narasipura in the Mysore district to Siddarame Gowda and Boramma. He didn't start attending school until he was eleven years old, although he later earned his B. Sc. and LL.B. from Mysore University. He is one of five siblings and a member of the Kuruba Gowda tribe. Siddaramaiah worked as a law clerk for Chikkaboraiah in Mysore before briefly teaching the subject.

Siddaramaiah was married to Parvathi and they had two sons. His eldest son, Rakesh, who was regarded as his political heir, passed away in 2016 at the age of 38 from multiple organ failure. Yathindra, the surviving son, ran for and won a seat in the 2018 Legislative Assembly from the Varuna district in Mysuru.

Siddaramaiah’s Political Career

He entered the 7th Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1983 after running for office on a Bharatiya Lok Dal ticket from the Chamundeshwari constituency. From this constituency, he achieved five victories and three losses. Siddaramaiah served as the inaugural chairman of the Kannada Kavalu Samiti, a watchdog group established under Ramakrishna Hegde's chief ministership with the responsibility of monitoring the adoption of Kannada as an official language. Later, he was appointed minister of veterinary and animal services.

Siddaramaiah was chosen to serve as the Janata Dal's secretary general in 1992. He was appointed finance minister in the Deve Gowda-led Janata Dal administration in 1994. In 1996, he was appointed deputy chief minister. He was, nonetheless, removed from the Cabinet in 1999. Later, he joined the secular Janata Dal. When the Congress and JD(S) formed a coalition government in 2004, Siddaramaiah was once more appointed as the deputy chief minister. He was kicked out of the JD(S) in 2005 due to disagreements with H. D. Deve Gowda. A year later, he joined the Congress party. After Varuna became a constituency in 2008 following delimitation, Siddaramaiah represented it till he vacated the seat for his son in the 2018 polls and went back to his old constituency of Chamundeshwari.

Between 2013 and 2018, Siddaramaiah served a fruitful five-year stint as the chief minister of Karnataka. In addition, he became Devaraj Urs' successor as the second chief minister of Karnataka to hold office for the entire five years in 40 years. He also holds the record for the most state budget presentations as Karnataka's finance minister, doing it 13 times. Siddaramaiah, the incumbent chief minister, lost the 2018 elections in Chamundeshwari, Mysuru, to G T Deve Gowda of the JD(S). But he triumphed over Badami.
