An army vehicle met with a major accident on Friday in Sikkim. In the accident, 16 soldiers including 3 JCOs of the army were martyred. The incident took place at Jema in North Sikkim. The accident vehicle was part of a convoy of three vehicles. The convoy had moved from Chatten towards Thangu in the morning.
The vehicle skidded down a steep slope at a sharp turn on its way to Jemaa. Three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 jawans succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident. Rescue operations were launched immediately after the accident and four injured soldiers are being airlifted.
According to the army, the truck fell into a deep gorge while taking a sharp turn. "16 brave Indian Army personnel lost their lives in an Army truck accident on December 23 at Gema in North Sikkim," the Army said in a statement. It said an immediate rescue operation has been launched and four have been rescued. The injured jawans have been rescued with the help of helicopter. "Unfortunately, three Junior Commissioned Officers and 13 jawans lost their lives in the accident," the army said. The Indian Army stands with the bereaved families in this hour of grief.
