Laal Singh Chaddha, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Aamir Khan, failed to get viewers to the theatres. The highly anticipated movie struggled to earn $50 million at the box office. While analysts have given a variety of explanations for such a poor performance on the big screen, some of them have also linked it to the purported boycott movement launched by netizens against Aamir Khan and his crew in response to some contentious utterances.
Meanwhile, a few days ago a Delhi-based lawyer filed a case with Delhi Police commissioner Sanjay Arora alleged that Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, Paramount Pictures, and other parties "disrespected the Indian Army and damaged Hindu Sentiments" in his film "Laal Singh Chaddha." In his complaint to the Delhi Police, attorney Vineet Jindal claimed that the film had offensive material and asked for the filing of a FIR under sections 153, 153A, 298 and 505 of the IPC against Khan, the director Advait Chandan, and Paramount Pictures.
Additionally, the complainant took issue with a scene that he claimed was in the film and in which a Pakistani member of the military questioned the character Laal Singh Chaddha, "I perform Namaz and pray, Laal, why don't you do the same?" "My mum said all this puja paath is malaria," Chaddha (played by Khan) retorted. Riots are a result.
According to the complainant, the remark and depiction in the film not only incite and provoke feelings but also lead to "enraged emotions among the Hindu religious adherents."
The complaint went on to say that while the Indian Constitution guarantees everyone the freedom of speech and expression, it is inexplicable when this right is used inappropriately when it endangers the honour and harmony of the nation, inflames its citizens on the basis of community and religion, or jeopardises national security.
The comedy-drama Laal Singh Chaddha, written by Eric Roth and Atul Kulkarni, is directed by Advait Chandan. It is a remake of the 1994 American film Forrest Gump, which was produced by Aamir Khan Productions and Viacom18 Studios and was based on the same-named novel. The film was labelled a box office disaster or flop since its 180 crore budget was exceeded by less than 90 crores in its first week of international box office receipts.
