Surat: Today, on early Thursday morning, 6 factory workers died and 22 others were hospitalised after they inhaled toxic fumes from a chemical tanker leakage. The tanker was parked near the factory in Gujarat's Surat, officials stated.
The workers were in the factory were dyeing when the incident happened. The factory is located in the Sachin industrial area, said a Surat Municipal Corporation's (SMC) in-charge chief fire officer Basant Pareek.
He added, the fire department got a call around 4.25 am. Around 25 to 26 workers fell unconscious after inhaling the harmful fumes coming out of the chemical tanker parked on a roadside near the factory and were rushed to the hospital.
"Six people have died, while 22 others are hospitalised and undergoing treatment," the civil hospital's resident medical officer, Omkar Chaudhary, said.
The fire department later managed to close the tanker's valve to stop the leakage of toxic fumes, Mr Pareek said It was later reported that the driver of the tanker fled the spot after the gas leak.
Police officials reached the spot and have begun the investigation to nab the driver and the owner of the tanker.
