Born on this day in 1916, Madurai Shanmukhavadivu Subbulakshmi is considered to be synonymous with Carnatic music and was the first Indian singer to be awarded the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award. Born on this day in 1893, Shyamlal Gupta ‘Parshad’ was a fighter, journalist, social worker, and teacher of the Indian freedom struggle. He was the author of the flag song ‘Vijayi Vishwa Tiranga Pyara‘, the catalyst during the Indian freedom struggle.

On this day in 1965, Ardeshir Tarapore who was an officer in the Indian Army and a recipient of the Param Vir Chakra passed away. Tarapore joined the Hyderabad Army, and was commissioned in January 1942. Initially he joined the infantry, but was later transferred to an armoured regiment, the 1st Hyderabad Imperial Service Lancers. During World War II Tarapore saw action in the Middle East.
