Born on this day in 1901, Guru Hanuman was a legendary wrestling coach of India. He coached many medal-winning wrestlers and was awarded the prestigious Dronacharya Award in 1987, the highest recognition for a sports coach in India, and the Padma Shri in 1983.
Guru Hanuman was fit and actively coaching, consuming large amounts of ghee and milk, even in his late 90s. He died on 24 May 1999, at the age of 98, not of old age or any ailments, but in a car crash! He was on his way to Haridwar to bathe in the holy Ganga.
