Preet Chandi is a British-born Sikh army officer who has made history by becoming the first Indian origin woman to complete a solo expedition to the South Pole. Ms Chandi's adventure began in November 2021. when she embarked on her journey without any support from Antarctica's Hercules Inlet. Chandi spent the next few weeks skiing solo across Antarctica and announced on January 3 that she had completed the 1126 km trek in 40 days.
Alka Mittal becomes the first woman to be the chairman and Managing Director of ONGC. Also, she has been given the additional charge as the public sector undertaking’s Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). Till December 31, 2021, Subhash Kumar was holding an additional charge of CMD. Mittal joined the ONGC Board in 2018 on 27 November.
On Tuesday, TS Tirumurti is appointed as the new Chair of UN Counter-Terrorism Committee. In May 2020, Tirumurti served as Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs. He has worked in the Economic Relations portfolio (which included, inter alia, the Gulf and the Arab World, Africa, and India's Development Partnership).
Shri Soma Sankara Prasad is appointed as Deputy Managing Director, State Bank of India as Managing Director and Chief Executive officer in UCO Bank.
On Tuesday, Sindhutai Sapkal, widely known as ‘Anathanchi Maye’ or ‘Mother of orphans’, passed away due to a massive heart attack at a private hospital in Pune. She was 74 years old. Sindhutai Sapkal was well known social worker. She has raised hundreds of orphans and abandoned children. Also, she has contributed to the rehabilitation of women. Sindhutai died at 8.10 pm yesterday.
