The Government of India recently appointed Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar as the new Indian Navy chief. R Hari Kumar is currently the Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command and will take over his new office from 30th November onwards as stated by the Ministry of Defense. During his career journey with the Indian Navy, Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar has been awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) in the year 2010, the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in the year 2016, and the Param Vishisht Seva Medal (PVSM) in the year 2021 for his dedicated service.
Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar is married to Kala Nair, and the couple has a daughter.
Born in Trivandrum, Kerala, Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar joined the 61st course of NDA in January 1979 and was assigned the Juliet squadron, while Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar graduated from the NDA in December 1981.

During his career journey with the NDA, Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar has served as the Vice Chief of Defence Staff, the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, Chief of Personnel, and as the Chief of the Staff of the Western Naval Command.
Kumar was also the commandant of the Naval War College, Goa and he also served as the naval advisor to the government of Seychelles. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Vice Admiral R Hari Kumar holds an M.Phil. in Defence and Strategic Studies from the University of Mumbai.
