World Teachers Day is observed every year on 5th October,i.e., today, across the globe.
The World Teachers Day commemorated the anniversary of the adoption of the 1966 ILO UNESCO Recommendation concerning the ‘status of teachers,’ and hence the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) declared 5th October as “World Teachers Day in 1994. The World Teachers Day was adopted in a special intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in collaboration with the ILO, in Paris.
Considering the history, the UNESCO General Conference also adopted the UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Higher-Education Teaching Personnel in 1997, following the adoption of World Teachers Day.
World Teachers Day aims at improving, appreciating, and assessing the status of teachers and educators across the world. The day suits best and is also used to address the issues related to teachers and teaching.
The official website of UNESCO states that, “This recommendation sets forth the rights and responsibilities of teachers as well as international standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment, employment, teaching and learning conditions.”
The celebration of World Teachers Day is based on a theme every year, and, the theme for World Teachers Day 2021 is “Teachers at the heart of education recovery”.
