The theme for World Water Day 2023 is 'Accelerating the change to solve the water and sanitation crisis'.

What is Water Scarcity?

The lack of sufficient access to the water resources required to sustain a region is the essence of the term "water scarcity." The phrase describes both healthy environmental functioning and human activities like drinking and cooking. From a difficult but manageable water shortage to a full-blown water disaster, there are different levels of water scarcity.

How to Save Water Efficiently?

  • Improving irrigation efficiency- One of the major uses of water is industrial agriculture. The agriculture sector might save a significant amount of water by simply switching from flood irrigation systems to sprinkler or drip irrigation systems. More effective irrigation systems can considerably reduce water use when combined with better soil management techniques like no-till or limited tillage and mulching, which lowers soil evaporation.

  • Increasing Water Storage- Droughts and floods occur more frequently as a result of climate change and global warming. We can prevent losing floodwater to the ocean, where it would become salinized and more challenging to treat, by increasing the reservoir's capacity to absorb and hold it. During dry spells, this water can be used to supply water.

  • Education on Saving Water- Every community must work together to lessen the threat of water scarcity. The world needs water stewards in all their forms now more than ever. Water stewardship can be a significant piece of the puzzle when it comes to limiting water scarcity, whether you take shorter showers, install low-flow toilets, collect rainwater for garden use at home, reuse grey water, eliminate leaks and other water inefficiencies at schools and offices, or invest in sustainable energy and water reduction initiatives by businesses.

  • Water filtration systems- Having access to water is one thing, but having access to water that is safe to drink is quite another. Systems that effectively filter water ensure that freshwater can be used. It's for this reason, among others, that a large number of businesses around the world are devoted to creating sophisticated water filtration systems that produce purified water devoid of bacteria, microbes, and other contaminants and deliver this clean drinking water to as many schools, hospitals, workplaces, and homes as is humanly possible.
