On Monday, May 17, Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Governor Jagdeep Dhankhar over the arrest of state ministers and a senior party MLA by the CBI. In the Narada Sting Scam case, the CBI has arrested 4 TMC leaders including 2 ministers of West Bengal on Monday. The Kolkata High Court has also stayed the bail of these leaders.
TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee said the governor "is walking around like a bloodsucker and a mad dog.” “The Governor has retaliated without consulting the state government. The governor has become a bloodbath. He is now trying to get a ticket from the BJP ahead of the 2024 election.” he further added.
TMC supporters pelted stones at security forces to protest the arrest of their leaders outside the Central Bureau of Investigation CBI office in Kolkata on Monday. The CBI has arrested ministers Firhad Hakim, Subrata Mukherjee and MLA Madan Mitra in connection with the Narada scam.
Mamata Banerjee went to Supreme Court against CBI
During the 2016 assembly elections, the Narada sting scandal surfaced, in which videos of 12 leaders including the then Trinamool minister, MP, MLA and an IPS officer were seen taking bribes of huge amounts. Later Mamata government reached the Supreme Court to stop the CBI investigation in this case too. However, in 2017 the High Court ordered a CBI inquiry. After this, in 2018, Mamta withdrew her consent to the CBI investigation in Bengal without the permission of the state government.
Then in February, just before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when CBI arrived to question Rajiv Kumar, the head of the Special Investigation Team formed by the Mamata government and the then Commissioner of Kolkata Police for the chit fund scam, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reached Rajiv's residence. Mamata Banerjee then went to Dharmatalla and sat on a dharna against this inquiry. The case then reached the Supreme Court and finally, Rajiv Kumar had to appear before the CBI.
Subsequently, in the same year last February 2021, when CBI reached Mamta's MP's nephew and Youth Congress President Abhishek Banerjee's wife Rujira for questioning, just before that Mamata reached her nephew's residence and left after some time. Mamta had made it a fierce issue in the elections. From the CBI to the Enforcement Directorate (ED), Income Tax Department and even against the Central Force and Election Commission in the elections, Mamata had opened her front.
