World Thinking Day 2021: The History, Significance and Theme for World Thinking Day 2021

World Thinking Day 2021: Also known as Thinking Day, the World Thinking Day is a day of international friendship. Led by all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, this day is celebrated annually on 22nd February across the globe. Also celebrated by the Scout and Guide Organisation across the world, the World Thinking Day is the day when they think about their sisters and brothers in every country of the world and the meaning and global impact of Guiding. In this article further, we will know about the History, Significance and the theme of World Thinking Day 2021.

 

History of World Thinking Day 2021:  

At the Fourth Girl Scout International Conference held in 1926, the need for a special international day was highlighted by the conference delegates,  when Girl Guides and Girl Scouts would think of the worldwide spread of Girl Guiding and Girl Scouting, and of all the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the world, giving them, their “Sisters”, thanks and appreciation. 

 

22nd February was decided by the delegates as the birthday of both Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scout movement, and Lady Olave Baden-Powell, his wife and the First World Chief Guide. 

 

However, at the 30th World Conference in 1999, the name was changed from “Thinking Day” to “World Thinking Day”, so as to emphasize the global aspect of the special day. 

 

Significance of World Thinking Day 2021:

The World Thinking Day works as an opportunity to speak out on issues that affect young women and fundraise for 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 150 countries.

 

Day the observes some great traditions and activities being performed such as Rangers from Mona Burgin’s Unit in Auckland, New Zealand set off while it is still dark to climb to the top of Mount Eden. After this, a little campfire and flag-staff are set up and as the sun rises above the sea, they raise the Guide World Flag, sing the World Song and speak some of the people and the countries they are Thinking about. And, then they start “The Big Think” which further travels all across the world. 

 

The theme of World Thinking Day 2021: 

With the motive of increasing awareness and sensitivity to global concerns, the World Thinking Day celebrations are based on an important international issue as the theme every year which is selected by the Girl Guides and Girl Scouts. So, the theme for World Thinking Day 2021 is “Stand together for Peace.”
